My October Top 5

Oktober 1, 2020 by katharina.kuehr Kommentar verfassen

We are fully into fall now and all feeling it. Days are getting short, skies are getting grayer and we are getting our coats out again.. but it also is the season of loads of tea, hot chocolate, cozy evenings and beautiful walks in nature. To make your October a bit better I have got my 5 favorite things for you here, that will take this month next level!

Food of the month – Brussel sprouts

This is one of the most controversial foods ever. I do not know a single person that is feeling kind of „fine“ about brussel sprouts – either you love them or you hate them. And I really do not understand everyone who does not like them. The flavor, the texture, everything about them is so good. And they are really healthy too.

You could probably already tell by their color that they are healthy (is there even a green food that is not healthy?) heir incredibly high amount of antioxidants can help lower your risk of chronically diseases. And, as pretty much every veggie, they are high in fibre and low in calories. Fibre is an essential component of a healthy diet for ultimate gut health and a well-working digestion. Besides, they have an incredibly high content of Vitamin K. Actually 100g provide you with more than your daily need of Vitamin K. So yes, they are a great health veggie. Plus, they are super easy to prepare. Throw them into curries, stews, a wok or just roast them as they are with a little olive oil and sea salt. You can make the Vegan Rice Noodle Salad with Crispy Tofu or my Super Green 20-minute Curry ! There are more recipes to come this month, so stay tuned!

Recipe of the month – Unbelievably Good (Healthy) Vegan Half Baked Cheesecake with Figs & Secret Ingredient

Figs again? Yes! I definitely love figs – that’s why we have another fig recipe in my favorites! And this recipe especially is insane! The vegan “cheesecake” is some next level goodness. Don’t be afraid when you hear vegan and cheesecake in a sentence but trust me and this recipe and you’ll be surprised how good it is.

It’s healthier than regular cheesecake, SO easy to make, incredibly tasty and if you do not like figs, top it with truly and fruit – you could go for blueberries, raspberries or just with nothing on top! This truly is one of my absolute favorite recipes so it just had to be included here.

Product of the month – Wien – Food. People. Stories – by NENI

Earlier in September I was invited to the introduction of the new cookbook from the Molcho Family (founders of NENI), called Wien by Neni. No this is not sponsored in any way but I decided to choose this as the product of the month because I am genuinely in love with this book.

It is for sure not your average cookbook. You can really feel the hours of love, work and committed it took to write it. Besides their amazing recipe creations (like Stuffed Onions with Cashew Tahina or Chicken Gyoza with Caramelized Kimchi and Date Marinade) but they also included recipes from their favorite restaurants in Vienna (such as Mochi, Mayer & Freunde, zum Herkner…)! And you get to know the family, their story and all of their favorite addresses in Vienna. No matter whether it is for Brunch, a fancy dinner, an American diner or a nice bar, they have got you covered!

I would not recommend this book without having tried to make anything out of it. I tried the Roastbeef with Tomatoes and Green Pepper Salsa and it was amazing! So worth the purchase – especially when we are confronted with the possibility of having to stay at home any day at the moment! In this case, you would not run out of ideas to cook (besides the one from my blog :))!

Workout of the month – ShapedByIB 20 minute Scorch

Aka death by crizou. You may think it only is a 20 minute workout, how hard can this be? Well, I guess you have never pushed yourself through a ShapedByIB workout!

What even is that? Shaped By IB is one of the most popular fitness and workout locations in Vienna. It is located in the heart of Vienna, in the cellar of a ship. Pretty cool right? As if that wasn’t enough, for every workout you get a gadget that measures your heart rate all throughout the workout and gives you information on your heart rate and burned calories while you are working out. Really innovative and so much fun! The workouts are made of a strength (on the floor) and cardio part (on the treadmill) as for the original workout or a strength (on the floor), a cardio (on the treadmill) and a boxing part (with boxing bags) when you do the Scorch! Whichever workout you choose, you are going to feel sore the next day for sure.

But, as with most of us, Covid-19 has also affected Shaped By IB. But they did not complain and tried to make the best out of the situation with innovation. And truly, what they did is great. The Team from Shaped by IB created an online Platform with workouts based on the Shaped by IB principle – but such you can make at home and without equipment. All you need is a monthly or yearly membership and you have access to over 50 workouts with new ones coming every month!

My favorite at the moment is the 20 minute Scorch from trainer Chris. A mix of cardio, strength and boxing and it hits hard. If you want to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone, you need to try this. After you have pushed yourself through this workout to give everything, you will feel amazing!! The feeling after really is unbeatable!

Inspiration of the month – Linda Sun

You have probably never heard of her – much like me up until a few weeks ago. Actually I discovered her through a friend who shared a video of mine with me, and now she is one of my favorite food youtubers (is that even a thing! out there!

What does she share?

Lots of pancakes and sweaty workouts! No but really, besides that she shares a lot of delicious recipes, realistic eats, super inspiring talks about body positivity, a healthy relationship with food and lots of positive vibes. Her videos just inspire one to live the best life we could and enjoy it to the fullest! I can only recommend her from the bottom of my heart! She’s such a cute girl!

Happy October

I hope you like and enjoy this inspiration! These really are things that make my life a little bit better on a daily basis, an I hope they do the same to you! I am wishing you a wonderful fall and an amazing start into October!

All the best,
Katie // Une Petite Cuisinière

P.s.: if you are wondering where that delicious green smoothie in my hand is from – it is from Colour Cups, which is a start up which makes incredibly good smoothies and porridges, freezes the ingredients, and delivers them to your home! You reheat or blend them and your breakfast is ready to go in 2 minutes! We have visited them last week and were absolutely amazed!

My September Top 5

September 1, 2020 by katharina.kuehr Kommentar verfassen

Everything is slowly coming to get back into a routine and our daily lives with work, uni and school are starting again after a summer break. With the start of a new routine and a start of fall, I decided to start something new too. A series on my blog, where I´ll introduce you to my 5 favourite things every month. I hope to inspire you a little bit with this and make you life a tiny bit easier! I would also love to hear, what your top 5 things are, so feel free to leave a comment at this post!

Food of the month – Beetroot

The beetroot is part of the beets family (who would have guessed?!). It is a food that has already been eaten for many many years. It is believed that it has originated in the Middle East but also been eaten by the Romans, the Egyptians, and ancient greeks. Today they can be found in almost every part of the world, in foods but also in food and other natural colouring.

The part of the beet that usually is eaten is the root, although you can eat the greens as well. Usually they are steamed, boiled or roasted but it also is possible to have them in their raw form (not sure if this is quite delicious though). You can purchase fresh beets at pretty much any market from August to January or you can find them precooked and repacked in most supermarkets.

Beetroots actually are a super healthy root vegetable. They are very low in calories (with about 43kcal /100grams), since they are made up of 88% water. The rest is carbohydrates and protein. They also come with a decent amount (3.8g/100g) of fibre. Besides this they are high Vitamin B6 and C, Manganese, Iron and Potassium. These are important for cell function, immune system, reducing blood sugar levels and the transport of oxygen in the blood cells.

So, it is a true superfood actually. Plus, what also is great about it is that it can be grown regionally and that it has a very long season, so almost half a year! I truly believe that it is very underrated. Beetroot is delicious and so versatile. I already have some super delicious beetroot recipes on my blog, like the Beetroot Pasta Bake with Goats Cheese or the Seed Coated Beetroot Balls! And don’t worry, there are a few more to come. Don’t want to spoiler, but I´ll give you a little hint; hummus, falafel,…!

I can only recommend incorporating more beetroot into your diet because it is super delicious, and extremely healthy!

Product/ Brand of the month – Pastafani Organic Basil Pesto

I know I know, I have told you of this a few times already. However, I cannot stress enough HOW good this is! Since summer is coming to an end, and the fresh basil is disappearing to make your own homemade pesto, packed pesto is a life saver.

Organic pesto made from Austrian ingredients only! That really exists. And believe me, I would not tell you that it is good, if it wasn’t! It is at least as delicious as the freshly made pesto in Italy. You can already tell by it’s colour that it’s got to be delicious. The darker the better.

And I have got a BONUS for you: you can even get 10% off your order when you order it with the discount code UNEPETITE10 ! Guys, I can tell you, it is worth the 5 euros spent. More than worth!

If you need some pesto recipe inspiration you can make the Incredibly easy Strawberry and Pesto Couscous with Crumbled Feta (just use figs instead of strawberries since they are in season), or the Ultra Green Pesto Salad with Burrata.

Recipe of the month – French Toast with whipped Ricotta and Figs

This recipe is from last year but believe me, it is incredibly delicious! Softly soaked bread that’s crispy on the outside, creamy, honey dreamy whipped ricotta cheese, that is so smooth and delicious and the fresh figs on top. Sunday morning heaven.

No matter if you make that for brunch when your friends are over or as a breakfast for dinner, it is incredibly delicious any way! Plus, you can make use of the juicy and sweet figs that currently are in season!! Just heaven!

See the recipe here!

Workout of the month – 15 minute Sixpack by Pamela Reif

Since I love working out and we all know that being active is an essential part of staying healthy, I though I needed to include a workout into these top 5 as well!

I think since quarantine started, we have all gotten to know Pamela. And to be fair, her workouts are really good. While she definitely has something for everyone, from total beginner who works out for the first time – to extremely hard ones, I currently love her 15 minute Sixpack workout!

It is not something where you do lots of mountain climbers and jump around but one, which is rather focused on slower movements. This is great because you can really feel how you are using your abs and you also really do feel it after.

It is great if you want a slower workout focused on your abs. And a little tip: do it at the beginning of the workout because it is a killer at the end!

Inspiration of the month – The Happiness Advantage

For this last part of my September top 5 series I want to introduce something to you that has changed my life a little bit and influenced it positively. This can be a book, a person, a documentary, or anything else. But for this month, it is a book.

I have actually stumbled across this book accidentally when I was studying about happiness. I found it sounded interesting and that’s why I ordered it. I was so keen to learn about what Shawn Actor had to tell, so I immediately started reading it. And believe me, it is not a book that you will put away and don’t continue reading for a while but it’s a book that will make you forget about dinner (and that means something, coming said from a food blogger who wouldd never forget about dinner).

The author basically makes the claim that contrary to what is generally believed, that you need to be successful to be happy, the reality is the other way around. You need to be happy to be successful! In his book he describes 7 simple principles that will help anyone be happier and therefore also more successful. It is scientifically proven with studies he conducted.

I need to say, that this is something extremely interesting and fascinating to read. It basically makes one realise that you already have everything you need to be happy so it really is down to you to make use of these 7 tips to turn your life around. I can definitely highly recommend this book to anyone, and especially to those who are struggling to be happy or successful at the moment!

These are my 5 favourite things in September, things that make the month a bit better, brighter, and easier. I hope you enjoyed these five things and I would love to hear if you like this new kind of series in the comments!

I am wishing you all some beautiful last weeks of late summer and enjoy the first leaves turning brown!

My favorite brunch spots in Vienna

Juli 4, 2020 by katharina.kuehr Kommentar verfassen

[ Brunch ] – a meal eaten when you wake up too late to have breakfast, but do not want to go until lunch without having eaten. Instead you have a single meal called brunch.

Ok, let’s make that be a katie definition. The favorite meal of the day because it gives you an excuse to have pancakes and avo toast all at the same time and you do not need to get up early.

I feel like brunch has become a very popular thing in the recent years. Although making it at home is very fun and I have several recipes for this on my blog it also is super nice to go out and get it served. That’s why in this blog post I have written down my favorite places to go and have brunch in Vienna. They are in no particular order but they are all super good!

Cafe Telegraph

Garnisongasse 7, 1090 Wien

Cafe Telegraph is a very cute coffee shop pretty much in the heart of Vienna. You can find a very nice seating both, outside and inside which makes it perfect for any season! On their menu you can find traditional breakfasts from all over the world such as an english breakfast with baked beans and sausages but also such as Shakshuka. Plus, this restaurant is great for all avocado lovers because they even have a certain part of their menu dedicated to avocados. Their you can find fancy items such as avocado pancakes! Definitely worth going their and trying out their super tasty menu!

Ramasuri/ Drechsler

Praterstraße 19, 1020 Wien
Linke Wienzeile 22, 1060 Wien

Both of these are super cute! Why did I put them both in one bullet point? They are both part of the same group of restaurants and have pretty much the same breakfast menu! Ramasuri is located very close to the Danube canal while Cafe Drechsler is close to the famous Naschmarkt. What I like most from the menu? definitely the pancakes (so fluffy omg) and the avocado toast. It’s one of the best in town! And also, their service is so super friendly. Always a good choice going there!

Babula

Heinestraße 15, 1020 Wien

Babula is a pretty new hotel. But Babula also is breakfast heaven. Not only do they have such a nice service and interior but they have super tasty and pretty looking (!!) breakfast too. Their menu is creative but still has all the basics covered. So you can find beet root porridge but also French toast and eggs Benedict. Moreover, they have adorable looking drinks such as a pink latte. Just wow.

Motto am Fluss

Franz-Josefs-Kai 2 EG, 1010 Wien

This one is very popular among the Viennese. This café has one of the nicest location in Vienna. it is located on a ship ( which stands still al year) right on the Danube canal. Always booked out, so you need to make a reservation. They have a rather small breakfast menu but it’s delish! Just be aware, that on the weekend, when there are a lot of people, you might need to wait a little longer!

Café Marché

Währinger Str. 6-8, 1090 Wien

I feel like this is a rather secret spot. It is also pretty much in the heart of Vienna, and in my opinion the cutest cafe in Vienna. They only have very few seats, both inside and outdoors, which makes it super cute and special. I believe that they have THE BEST AVO TOAST in entire Vienna. I absolutely love it. Also their coffee and coffee art is amazing there. Plus, what’s super cute is that they always have freshly baked treats.

Klyo

Uraniastraße 1, 1010 Wien

Klyo is a pretty popular restaurant in Vienna. It is located in the Urania, an observatory in the middle of Vienna, which is right next to the Danube river. You have a super nice view from there in in summer you can even enjoy your break on their terrace. This one, especially on Sundays, is always booked out so make sure to reserve a table ahead of time! My favourite breakfast item? The scrambled egg with the bread. This freshly toasted bread is a pure dream. You cannot get enough of that!

Mae Aurel

Salzgries 3, 1010 Wien

This spot is rather new in town but amazing. They serve all day breakfast, which is not your average breakfast menu. You can get pancakes with caramelised banana and bacon, Toasted sourdough with beet hummus and avocado or eggs Benedict all day long. And what’s a bonus there: the drinks are heavenly and so creative. Perfect for a nice brunch with your friends. Mae Aurel is also located in the heart of Vienna.

Ulrich & Erich

Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz 1, 1070 Wien
Neustiftgasse 27, 1070 Wien

These two coffees are also super duper cute. They are in the seventh district and right next to each other. They also are part of the same group. Very similar, but still a little bit different. I feel like the breakfast menu from Erich is a bit more extra and the one from Ulrich a bit more regular. But honestly, I love them both. The area around them also has super cute and nice shops, which are all a bit special. Definitely worth visiting.

Café Himmelblau

Kutschkergasse 36, 1180 Wien

If you’d ask my mom what her favourite breakfast spot in Vienna was, shed probably tell you that it is Café Himmelblau. No wonder. I have never had a bad experience when going there. The service also is super friendly, the location super cute since it is located in the middle of a market in the 18th district, and the food is a dream. It is not a super fancy breakfast menu, more typical Viennese but you do not want anything else or more when going there. This, is ALWAYS a good choice and almost always completely fully booked – no matter if it is during the week or on the weekends. A super good tip!

Superfood Deli

Mariahilfer Str. 45 (im 1. Raimundhof), 1060 Wien
Lerchenfelder Str. 63, 1070 Wien
Operngasse 34, 1040 Wien

This place is very popular amongst the young. It serves super tasty and ice cold smoothie bowls with a side of amazing avocado toast, coffees and smoothies. You can, of course, enjoy them all day long either indoor or outdoors, or also to go! Their menu is completely vegan and organic but it also comes with a price. If you decide that you want to bring their breakfast home, you can also purchase their açai pads and make an açai bowl at home. Still, theirs is unbeatable I believe. The best açai bowl in Vienna!

Karma Food

Ausstellungsstraße 63, 1020 Wien

How to describe this best? Cute. Tasty. Super friendly. Karma food also serves food which is mostly organic, healthy, and vegetarian or vegan. Although you can find some items with meat products on their menu, the most part is plant based. But don’t think this is boring or anyhow not tasty. Because that would be a huge lie. Their food is AMAZING. So fresh and flavourful. And let me tell you, if you go there, you NEED to try their banana bread! Amazing. Plus, you get some of my favourite bars, Lini´s bites, there!

Joseph Brot

Albertinaplatz / Führichgasse 6, 1010 Wien
Landstraßer Hauptstraße 4, 1030 Wien
Kirchengasse 3, 1070 Wien

Last one on that list, but definitely not least, Joseph Brot. As the name says (Brot = bread), this actually is a bakery. They have lots of different and super tasty breads with all organic ingredients. You can get their bread and enjoy it at home or you can simply have breakfast there. This photo does not quite do it justice, but their breakfast is amazing. And I love that it is all organic and mostly regional.

These are my absolute favourite breakfast spots in town. I need to say, I have not tried every single one yet but I probably will, and add some to that list. I hope that this helps you the next time you wonder where to go and have brunch!

Bon appetit, and happy brunch!

Enjoy,
Katie // Une Petite Cuisinière

A Healthy Morning Routine

Juni 17, 2020 by katharina.kuehr 1 Kommentar

It’s early, our bed is still so comfy, we just wanna stay in a little longer. Maybe check our phones for the latest posts on IG or if we have gotten any messages, mails or snaps. It is already hard enough to get out of bed and now we should also have a healthy morning routine? Why???

I know that not everyone is an early bird. That partially lies in our genes. Still, mornings are the start of a new day. Meaning they set the foundation of the day. Mornings have such a big impact on the way the remaining day will be. If you start it productively, you will want to be productive for the rest of your day. If you do not believe me try it out.

With this blog post I do not want to tell you what you have to do, or the only way that you will have an amazing day is if you stick to this routine. By no means I am trying to do that. I want to share the tipps and tricks with you that have helped me a lot to have a healthy, not stressful, productive and nice morning. They should be more of a guideline of what can help you if you are struggling to have a peaceful and healthy morning.

Don’t hit snooze

This might be the hardest one to start with, I know. More than half hit the snooze button at least once, and more than a third hit it three times. While it is very nice to stay in bed a little (or a lot) longer, it is not very good for us. Hitting the snooze button messes with our sleep cycle. The first time it rings, we wake up. Whenever we hit snooze our body thinks it has time to rest and with every time hitting the snooze it actually has a harder time waking up and getting up (this has something to do with the REM and NREM sleep, which I do not want to go into more detail but you can read it here). So getting up the first time you hear the alarm does not only safe you time in your morning but it also is healthier for your body.

Read & don’t look on your phone

Is your alarm on your phone? If the answer is yes, then you will probably be very likely to check what has been going on in the past hours as soon as you stop your alarm. But this honestly is not a very good start into the day. Oftentimes, the first thing you see or the first piece of information you receive in the morning is negative. Maybe it is because of a negative event, which a newspaper wrote about or you saw a post somewhere and now feel you have been missing out on something. I mean think of it. If the first thing you experience in a day is negative, how will this set up your mood for the remaining day. I feel like, straight after waking up, our mind is still very vulnerable and therefore easily influenced by bad news because we still are tired and do not have the energy to stay above it or not let it get close to us.

Try reading a few pages of a book instead of checking your phone right away. This way you can stay in bed a little longer (but you are awake, because you did not hit snooze) and you start the day educating yourself. This does not have to be much. Even 10 minutes do just fine. I always enjoy reading more scientific book in the morning from which I can learn something. By reading a few pages of a book, I have new information and knowledge that I can use in this day.

Make your bed

„If you want to change the world, start by making your bed“. I have heard this sentence a few years ago in a speech from an admiral. The meaning and power behind it is tremendous. Of course, this does not only apply if you want to change the world, but if you want to be productive or plan to achieve something big. We always have to start out small. By having this one simple task done every morning, we have feel a little proud of ourselves. And this pride and feeling of accomplishment, encourages us to do many other tasks this day. So one fulfilled task turns into many fulfilled tasks.

Workout or stretch

To be fair, not everyone is a morning workout person. But working out in the morning is something worth trying out. Why is this so beneficial in the morning? In my blog post about „Why working out is more than getting in shape“ you can read about various benefits working out has on our physical and mental wellbeing. But what I think is amazing about working out in the morning is what it does to you for the rest of your day. It gives you energy, makes you happier (and gives you a happier and more optimistic mindset), and boosts your creativity. Considering this, it is amazing what it can change throughout the rest of your day. Each day, we make thousands of decisions. Conscious and unconscious. And whether you are happy, creative and energised has an enormous influence on these decisions. More than you think it does. So working out in the morning has the power to change the way your day will be.
Plus, it is similar to the task of making your bed, you will be proud that you have already accomplished something in the morning and will be encouraged to do more throughout the rest of the day. You do not have to do an hour long workout. Just 15 or 20 minutes will make you feel as if you have done something good for yourself.

Meditate

This is something very important to me and it can actually change the way I see the day. For me, taking 5 minutes to meditate, helps me SO MUCH to get my thoughts in order. When meditating, I can set my focus and decide on how I want to make the day be like. It helps me to remind myself of things that are important to me, to see a chance in every loss or failure and to accept certain things as they are. Plus, or most importantly it makes me be in peace with myself, which is essential (to me!) for having a positive day.

If you have never tried out meditation before, please do not except all of this coming the first time you practice it. This needs time and practice. Nothing comes overnight. But it is worth practicing.

Plan the day

These are both things I only started in Quarantine. But now they are an essential part of my morning routine. Why?

Planing the day out can help you get more organised throughout the whole day. Always in the mornings I like to write down what I would like to do or get done this day On a piece of paper or a note-book. I can tick everything I have done off. This does not only give one a nice and proud feeling of having something accomplished and being productive, but it also helps to get an overview of what you want to do that day. Otherwise you may start the day with a thousand things in your head you want to do and by the time you leave the house you feel super stressed because you do not want to forget about anything or are not sure if you can get everything done. By simply taking 3 minutes and writing everything down, you will know exactly what you want/ need to do, your do not forget about anything and you do not have to stress out. It is such a simple habit that has such a big impact.

Journal

Another thing to do that takes time? Yes! But seriously, this might take 2 minutes, if even, and it has the power to change the whole way your day is going to be.

Try to write down 3 things you are grateful for, 1 good gesture you want to do to someone else today and a positive self affirmation. You might wonder what this helps, and I understand you doubt. Focusing on good things in the morning, primes you for good things throughout the day. If you take just a little amount of time in the morning to make you brain concentrate on the positive aspects of life, it will automatically look out for the more positive things throughout the rest of the day (I have learnt this in the book „the happiness advantage“ by Shawn Achor). And it actually works wonders. Even after the first time doing it! But of course, the longer you practice it, the more beneficial it is!

Healthy breakfast & Hydrate

Last tip on my morning routine list is start your day with a healthy breakfast. When you start your day with a healthy breakfast you are actually going to be more likely to stay healthy through the rest of your day. First of all this is because if you know you started your day healthy, you do not want to make the rest of the day unhealthy. Additionally, when your first meal of the day is full of all the nutrients your body needs, you will also be far less likely to have cravings throughout the rest of the day! On my recipe page you can find a lot of healthy breakfast options! Or simply klick here )

Drinking water also is very important in the morning because your body has been without any for several hours. Probably somewhere between 6-9. To rehydrate it, it is very important to drink water when you wake up. This will also get your metabolism going.

Conclusion

Getting up even a little bit earlier is not easy. But once you are into it, you know how worth it it is! When you stick to a healthy morning routine you will feel the impact it has on your whole day immediately and you will be surprised by how immense they are.

Just one really important note:

If you have been always getting up super last minute lately, do not try to get up an hour earlier from one day to the other to fit everything of the list below in. You will be tired and frustrated after a week. Start with incorporating one thing at a time into your daily routine. That way you can slowly adapt and change your habits. Remember: change needs time!

So now you know a lot on how to get the most out of your mornings and it solely is up to you to stick to it or not! Anyway, I hope that I could give you some inspiration to start your day the best way you can!

Love,
Katie // Une Petite Cuisinière
